ERNESTUS (Arent, Johannes, Arent, Johannes)

Ernestus was born 27 October 1776 and baptized 3 November 1776 Dutch Reformed Church of Schenectady.  Ernestus married first Martha Becker in Schenectady about 1808/09.  Ernestus married second Elizabeth Gray 24 March 1814 at Shepardstown, VA.  She was from Ireland and was born there in 1788. They later removed to Madison, Ohio, and then Winchester, IN.

In the article titled "Reminiscences," which was printed in the Greenville Newspaper, Ohio, 17 May 1902, the following information was given about the family:

At the age of fourteen, [Ernestus] was bound to a German to serve until he was twenty-one years of age, to learn the gun and whitesmith trade.  He was a brutal, cruel master.  On arrival at his majority, he receive from home, in addition to his trade, a silver watch, the outside case being made of turtle shell, and a yearling colt; while Uncle John received, to off set this outfit, the home farm of three hundred acres.  With a splendid knowledge of his trade, he started his way in the world.  He first went to Springfield, MA, and soon got a good position with the Government Armory; how long he remained there, I am unable to state.  About 1808 or 09, he married Martha Becker at Schenectady.  Soon after, in company with two other young married men with their wives, [he] started for the Indiana territory making his way to Wheeling, VA.  They constructed (these two men were mechanics) a flat boat, which was loaded with such things as would be necessary in making a  home in a new country.  In this boat, they floated down the Ohio River to where the city of Madison now stands; there they met General W. H. Harrison, who was Governor of Indiana Territory, and who had just finished surveying the plat of the town.  Here each selected a lot and erected each a log cabin.  Father had taken with him a complete set of tools for making funs, for which there was a good demand from the settlers.  The boat, in which they made the journey, they demolished and used the lumber in helping to construct their buildings.

On the 11th of January 1811, brother Aaron was born; his mother soon there after died.  Father often told how kind the wives of the comrades were to him and the motherless babe.  He disposed of his new home and, as soon as he could get passage on a keel boat, he worked his way back to Wheeling, and from there to Harper's Ferry, where he got a position in the Government Armory.  While working there, he became acquainted with Miss Elizabeth Gray; they were married on the 24th of March, 1814, and soon thereafter moved to Washington, D. C. where he soon became a contractor with the Government in doing the iron and plating work of the Capitol and the White House, which was burn by the British. In his work, he was successful, soon owning his home and shops.  In 1818, he traded his real estate in Washington for a lot of land in Kentucky; he went there in person and found the land as had been represented, but found his title defective and worthless.  With the help of Uncle John Gray, he traced the swindler over the south and west and finally located him working in the lead mines at Galena, IL, perfectly worthless.  Returning to Washington, he closed up his business, packed up their valuables that made the least bulk, loaded them with mother, Jane, and John, who were born there, in a one-horse wagon, and started for Fort Black, Darke County, Ohio, where he had preciously, through Uncle John Gray, entered a quarter-section of land, just west of the quarter that the Fort was located on.

I will digress a little here.  Grandfather Gray, Uncle Thomas Carson, and Uncle John Kinnear had preceeded them.  Uncle Thomas having entered the quarter section west of father (half for grandfather), and Uncle John Kinnear the quarter section next west.  The quarter section on which the Fort was located      had been entered by Zeddock Smith, who had made some little improvements nad had laid out some lots and named his town Madison.  He had sold three or four lots of which two had small hewn log houses on.  At that time, land had to be entered in quarter sections at $2.00 per acre, one-half paid at date of entry and balance in deferred payments.

After a long and tedious journey over mountains, rivers, plains, and swamps, they arrived at Fort Black.  (Grandfather with Grandmother and Aunt Mary, Uncle Thomas Carsons with Aunt Nancy and Uncle John Kinnear with Aunt Sarah and two children had preceded them.)  They procured a guide who piloted them down the south side of the great pigeon swamp to miles to the McClure cabin, crossing the head of White water, then north passing the John Rush cabin to Grandfather's.  (More)

JOHANNES (Arent, Johannes, Arent, Johannes)

Johannes Putman was baptized 7 February 1779 and probably died young because he had a younger brother named Johannes.

JOHANNES (Arent, Johannes, Arent, Johannes)

John Putman was born 31 August 1780 in Schenectady and baptized 10 September 1780 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Schenectady.  He remained on the home farm, 4 1/2 miles from Schenectady, and married Magdalena Vrooman 23 December 1804 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Schenectady.  Magdaline was born 17 March 1787 the daughter of Hendrick Vrooman and Sarah Gansalis.

The history of this family was printed in an article titled "Descendants of Putman Hill Settlers Mark Sesquicentennial of Their Own," which reads as follows:

Descendants of the original settlers of Putman Hill, Rotterdam, are commermorating a sesquicentennial of their own.  It was about 1798 that Arent J. Putman, a Holland Dutchman, rangy and strong-limbed, cut out the logs with which he built the first Putman habitation in Putman Rd.

The broad axe used in the hewing of the logs, with other relics of early days, has been presented to the Schenectady County Historical Society by the great-grandson of  the original settler, Jacob A. Putman  .  .  .  and today is on exhibition at the society's building.  The original Putman home was a humble place of habitation, set on the hillside near a small stream of water, overlooking a thousand acres of farmland      and forest.  The rangy Hollander cut the logs from the hillside forest, single-handedly and built the cabin and brought his family to the section just prior to ---, and it was not until years later, after he had enjoyed a periodof prosperity that he built more commodious quarters, a two story frame house which stood until about 1812, when the spacious Putman brick residence was erected across the farm lane fromthe frame house, where it stands today  .  .  . ..

There Andrew Yates Putman was born in the new brick house. There Jacob A., his son, was born in half-century later.  It  was not until 1941 that Jacob, the last of the Putman men, then 80 years old, and his wife, Sarah Van Hyke Putman left the ancient homesite, selling the property  .  .  .  ..

Andrew Yates Putman was the son of John, son of Arent J. Putman.  Andrew, not unlike other hilsdie boys, grew to rugged manhood, and each Sunday put off down the road to the little frame Dutch church that stood on the bank of  the Poentic Kil, on the site of the present Cobblestone Reformed church in  Putman Rd.

Andrew loved the open life of the hillsides, and music as well.  He played a finely-made and simply-ornamented flute of the period.  Down at the church they were wont to sing unaccompanied by music.  That is where Andrew came in handy and  his flute as well.

Recruiting the service of "Cobus" Schermerhorn, who live not far distant and played the bass violin, the church installed "music," and the congregation increased in size.  Each morning, young Putman and his companion would climb to the little balcony over the church entrance, "Cobus" laboriously working his big bass viol up the narrow stairway, to play for the service, as a Mr. Van Allen would bring forth his tuning fork and set the pitch for the singing.

The Putman's were patriotic and served in the militia of their day.  They saw warfare approach the "woestina" and became wilderness fighters with no thought of complaint.  One of them, reputed to be Arent J., the founder of the family, was a lieutenant in the militia.  One day he sat for his picture, in uniform, sword on display, and the painting became an heirloom  .  .  .  ..

Johannes Putman was baptized 2 October 1784 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Caughnawaga, Fonda, New York, and  was a son of David Putman and Rebecca Davis.  In "Reminiscences," Ernestus Putman Jr. wrote some information that seems to describe Johannes family:

During the Civil War, the 69th regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, to which I belonged, was detailed to guard the rebel officers captured at Fort Donaldson, among which I found a captain of a Tennessee regiment, named Wm. L. Putman.  I recognized him in a room with twenty-six other officers, and from what he told me he must have been a grandson of grandfather's brother [David (Johannes, Arent, Johannes)]  .  .  .  ..   Grandfather [Arent J.] married Elizabeth De Spitzer.

During the 1810 Census, a John Putman lived in Kanawah Co., VA, which later became a part of West Virginia.  This John may have been David and Rebecca Davis Putman's son.  John may have removed to Ross Co., Ohio, by the 1820 census and St. Louis, MO, by the 1830 census. (William B. Putman, Jr., 1993)

William, who would have been in his 60's, enlisted as a 1st Leut. and rose to captain in Company I of the 18th Tennessee Infantry. His son David was a private in the 11th Tennessee Cavalry, Holman's Unit.  I listed Anne as a widow in 1860, but William may simply have been away from home .  .  .  ..  Sixty is old, but a bunch of older men felt strongly enough to fight [against the North] and most were made officers.  (1994)

Van Rensselaer, 1776; lived Montgomery Co., 1790.  He had daughter Maria who married Joseph Briggs, born 1790, son of Stephen."  From the above query, I suppose David Putman and Rebecca Ferguson had a daughter Maria born about 1792.

David Putman was born 4 June 1793 and baptized at the Johnstown Presbyterian Church, Johnstown, New York.  His parents were listed as Robert David Putman and Rebecca.  Robert David may have been a name that David J. Putman, son of Johannes, used.  This David married Rebecca Davis.

Arent Derrickse Putman was born December 10, 1768, in the Town of Ephratah, Montgomery County, New York, and was baptized June 7, 1768 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Stone Arabia in Ephratah.  His sponsors were Lodewyck Putman and Elizabeth Suitz, his grandparents.

About 1787, Aaron married Alida Wilson.  She was born May 11, 1768, and was baptized June 7, 1768, at the Dutch Reformed Church of Stone Arabia.  Alida was the daughter of John Wilson and Barbara Dieffendorf.  Sponsors at her baptism were John and Jannitje Davis.

Arent and Alida Putman are enumerated in the 1790 New York Census in the Town of Caughnawagua, Montgomery County, next to Gisebert Van Brocklyn.  It is said that Arent and Alida lived in Bowman's Creek about six miles south of Canajoharie.

In the 1810 New York Census, Arent Derrick Putman appears in the Town of Cherry Valley near L. Putman, who was probably Lewis Putman his brother.

During the 1820 New York Census, Arent D. Putman is again in Cherry Valley, and during the 1825 New York State Census Aaron and Alida Putman lived in Schoharie, Schoharie County with 4 males and 2 females in his household.  The towns of Cherry Valley and Schoharie are next to each other.

Arent eventually removed to Wayne County, Michigan, but before he arrived there he seems to have lived in the Town of Medina, Orleans County, when the 1830 New York Census was taken.

Arent was in Michigan by 1836.  "Early Land Transfers of Detroit and Wayne County, Michigan," records the following land transaction by Arent and his wife Elizabeth:

William Steer of Spring Well Township purchased from Aaron Putnam and wife Elizabeth of Dearborn Township, May 3, 1836, 80 acres in . . . Township 3, 5 Range 10 E. in Wayne County.

From this land entry, it appears Arent married second Elizabeth unless Elizabeth is Alida.  The 80 arces next to Arent's was owned by Martin Van Riper and Lewis Putman both of Madison County, New York.  They had purchased a total of 240 acres with a patent dated June 26, 1835.  Lewis Putman was Arent's brother

A letter from Lewis D. Putman's daughter Marie Vrooman of Detroit, Michigan, dated October 8, 1890, said, ". . . uncle Aaron died at Sheldons, Washtenau County, in 1837."  Since there is no township or town called Sheldons in Michigan, I wonder if it was a Sheldon home.

Children:

1.      Richard.  Richard was born about 1788 in Montgomery County, New York.  During the 1820 New York Census, he may have lived in the Town of Lenox, Madison County.  His uncle Lewis lived in Lenox during the 1830 New York Census.  By the 1830 New York Census, Richard lived in the Town of Batavia, Genesee County, and during the 1840 New York Census he lived in Wheatland, Monroe County.  According to History of Livingston Co., New York, Richard was in attendance April 22, 1841, at the wedding of his brother Simon Putman to Maria Hever both of Wheatland, Monroe Co.  The wedding ceremony took place in Caledonia, Livingston County, just a couple of miles to the south.  Richard probably married Marie Hannah Schearman of Sharon, New York . . ..

William Putnam was born June 21, 1823, in Sharon, Schoharie County, New York.  In 1826, the family moved to Batavia, Genesee County, New York, where his boyhood was spent.  In 1839, when he was sixteen years of age his mother die and the family was broken up and scattered.  Having no home, he accepted the opportunity to learn the gunsmith trade and served as an apprentice until twenty-one years of age.  He worked at that business long enough to earn money for schooling.  In March 1841, he united by baptism with the Baptist church in Batavia and became a teacher in the Sunday school before he was 18 years old.  In 1845, he was licensed by the church to preach and in October of that year commenced his work in the ministry with the Baptist church in East Pembroke, six miles from his childhood home.  There he was publicly ordained to the work of the Christian ministry in 1848.  He subsequently served as pastor successfully at Shelby, Kendall, Waverly, and Lyons, New York.  While he was at Lyons, the Civil War broke out, and in August 1862 he enlisted as volunteer in the 160th Regiment, New York Infantry, where he served two and one-half years as private and chaplain.  After the war, he moved, in 1867, to Michigan, and preached successively at Mason, Plymouth, Howell, Unadilla, and Gaylord.  At each of these places, he organized the church and was the first pastor.  While in northern Michigan, he served three years as member and secretary of the county board of school examiners: five years as township health officer; two years as register of deeds; eight years as notary public and six years as postmaster, besides holding some other minor offices.  In 1892, he made his home in Lansing, and in that year was elected chaplain of Charles T. Foster Post, GAR, which position he continuously filled until 1913, a period of twenty-two years.  He was elected chaplain of the Department of Michigan GAR in 1902 and held that office continuously until 1913.  He was also chaplain of the Michigan Commandery of the Loyal Legion form 1907 until 1913.  At the time of his death, he was over 89 years of age; indeed he lacked but 49 days of his 90th birthday.

John and Barbara were sponsors 24 August 1804 at the baptizm of Abraham Putman, son of Christopher and Elizabeth Putman.  Johannes and Barbara (Bottman) were also sponsors 27 February 1811 at the baptizm of Jacob, son of Johannes Gem and Elizabeth.   They were again sponsors 17 May 1825 at the baptizm of John, son of Abraham Putman and his wife Hannah.  It appears Abraham was John and Barabara's son.

During the 1820 New York Census, John Putman was listed in Root with a male between 16 and 18 years of age (Abraham) and one male between 16 and 25 years

During the 1800 New York Census, Christopher and Elizabeth were residents of Frankfort, Herkimer Co., New York, and with them lived 2 males under the age of 10 and 1 female under the age of 10.

According to an early letter by Walter Van Brocklyn:  "Three Putman brothers from Montgomery Co., New York, went to Canada, but during the War of 1812 they crossed Lake Ontario and returned to the U. S.  One brother stayed in the town of Lyme, Jefferson Co., one returned to Montgomery Co., and another went to Niagara Co., New York.  It was Christopher Putman who eventually removed to Niagara Co., Philip who lived in Jefferson Co., and John who lived in Montgomery Co.  Christopher probably went to Canada before 1810 and turned by 1820.

During the 1820 New York Census, Christopher lived in Lyme, Jefferson Co., but by the 1830 New York Census, Christopher and his family were residence of the town of Portor, Niagara Co.  Both of these areas are along Lake Ontario, and it appears that many of Christopher were associated with the sailing profession.

During the 1850 New York Census, Elizabeth Putman lived with her daugther, Hannah, who married Asa Westcott and lived in Sommerset, Niagara Co.  According to the 1850 census, Elizabeth was born in New York in 1768.

           3.   Prob.             7.   Henry.  Henry was born in 1838.  The following from ---------------- gives a trustworthy description of the family:

Henry Putman, of Wilson, is truly a self-made man, who has built ships and navigated the waters all his life, until, within the last few years, he has been engaged in the manufacture of woodenware.  He is a son of Daniel and Sarah (Renshaw) Putman, and was born in 1838 at Somerset, Niagara County, New York.  Daniel Putman (father) was

born in the town of Schenectady, Schenectady County, this State, in 1795, and died February 17, 1878, in the town of Wilson, in the eighty-third year of his age.  He was a cooper by trade, and followed that occupation all his life.  He was a soldier in the War of 1812, and saw something of pioneer life and the red men.  Upon returning form hunting they either wanted his ammunition or what game he had, and he generally gave them the game, as powder was scarce, and without it there was little security.  He was an old-line Whig, but on the formation of the Republican party he became a democrat.  He married Sarah Renshaw, a native of England, who was brought to this country when but five months old.  To them were born twelve children, eight of whom are living:  Elizabeth, the oldest, married Laman Clark, and lives in Michigan;  Hannah, married Samuel Robinson, of Illinois;  Charlotte, married Abram Lake;  Clarissa, married Richard McCracken;  Sarah, married Steven Worden, and resides at Wilson; Jane and Henry.  Mrs. Putman died on August 8, 1891, in the eight-sixth year of her age.

Henry Putman came to the town of Wilson when a mere boy, where he received a very limited education. At the early age of seventeen years, he went to navigating, which he followed until 1895.  He built three vessels, being captain of one of them for five years, and afterward built one without assistance, of which he was captain for one year.  After leaving the water, in 1885, he erected his present manufacturing establishment.  He manufactures bushel measures, pickets for fencing, and headings for barrels.  He employs several hands and does a large business.

In  politics Henry Putman is an aggressive democrat, who believes in no half-way political measures, and who has always been an active worker for the success of democratic principles.  He is member of Lodge N. 331, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and is one of the energetic and successful business men of his community.

            4.   Abraham.  Abraham Bottman was born in Schoharie Co., New York, 24 August 1804 and baptized 10 October 1816 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Stone Arabia, Montgomery Co., New York.  His sponsors were Johanna and Barbara Bottmann.  At the time of Abraham's baptizm, his parents, Christopher and Elizabeth, were residents of Currytown, New York.

            7.   Prob. Henry.  Henry was born in 1814 in Canada.  He married a Sally and lived in Niagara Co. during the 1830 New York Census.  Henry may have been the father of Perry Putman, a cousin of Daniel Putnam, who was  born 1797 in Schoharie Co., New York.  In the 1850 New York Census, Henry and Sally had a son Peleg.  It may be that Peleg was later called Perry.  According to Perry's death certificate, Henry married Sarah Gordan.  Again possibly Sarah was Sally.  It appears that Sally died before the 1860 New York Census because Henry was then living in the home of Polly and William Fenton, Perry lived in the home of Mr. Ide in Wilson, Niagara Co., and Henry and Sally's daughters lived eslewhere.  It appears the family broke up after the death of Sally.

ANNA (Arent, David, Arent, Johannes)

Anna Putman, daughter of Arent Putman and Delilah Fox, was baptized 22 August 1783 Dutch Reformed Church of Caughnawaga.  According to an early letter written by De Witt Putman, a daughter of Arent and Delilah Putman married John Klock.  Since Nancy was sometimes used for Anna, it seems  very likely that Nancy Putman who married John J. Klock, Jr., was Arent and Delilia Putman's daughter.

John Klock's first, wife Elizabeth Lampman, died 30 November 1798.  His second wife, Elizabeth Nellis died 10 February 1809.  John married third Nancy Putman.

The following article by Gladys Grantinski depicts John Klock:

John Klock was born 8 December 1773 in Johannes' [Klock] house and died 20 December 1852.  He was buried near Narrows, Black Lake, in the town of Morristown, New York.  As a boy, he witnessed the horrors that confronted those who lived in the --- of the ruthless mob of Tories and Indians.  He saw service in the War of 1812 and was stationed at Sackets Harbor [Jefferson Co.] and later at Odgensburg, New York.  He was known as Major after the war although no proof has been established that he ever held the rank of major.  Tradition in the family is that while stationed at Sackets Harbor, his son Abraham, then but a boy in his early teens, rode a horse from Johannes' house to Sacket's Harbor for the use of his father.  If this be true, then no doubt he was a non-commissioned officer of some sort.  In the year 1836, or '37, he removed to St. Lawrence Co., New York, where he purchased a large tract of timber land on the west shore of Black Lake, which became known as Klock's Bush in later years . . . ..  With his wife Elizabeth Nellis, came Abraham, Daniel and Christian; by his third wife, Nancy Putnam, sons Isaac, Jacob, Luther.  All those by the second wife had offspring who were born in the Mohawk Valley.  John Klock, Jr.'s, tombstone bears the inscription "John Klock" without the middle initial as do records in the Sand Hill Church books extant in the Utica Library, Utica, New York, as well as those of the St. Johnsville Reformed Church where his name and that of one of his wives appear.  Nancy Putnam, the third wife was buried at the "Cedars,"  Black Lake . . . ..

A few Mohawk Valley Putmans claimed to be relatives of Gen. Isreal Putnam, and it appears some of Arent and Deliah Putman's d escendants were part of this group.  The Gratinski article also said Nancy Putman was the daughter of Capt. Isaac Putnam the brother of Gen. Israel Putnam.  Isaac Putnam was born in 1698 about hundred years before Nancy, or Anna, was born.  So, Nancy could not have been Isaac's daughter.  The obituary of DeForrest Putnam, Nancy' assumed great-nephew (Philip's grandson), also incorrectly said DeForrest descended from Gen. Putnam.

Ironically, it appears that John Klock, Jr., and Nancy Putman were second cousins.  Catherine Folts, John Klock, Jr.'s mother, was a cousin of Delilah Fox, Nancy's assumed mother (Mohawk Valley Petries).

The Gradinski article on John Klock stated Nancy Putman was born 21 March 1784 and died 21 March 1861.  Another article on "the Life of Joihn J. Klock" says that Nancy Putman was born 15 June 1783 and died 21 March 1861, which seems correct.

            Children:

            1.   Dorothy.   Dorothy was born in 1810 and died in 1859.  She married Ira Nellis.

            2.   Isaac.   He was born in 1812 and died in 1876.  Isaac married Lany Ann Nellis the daughter of John P. Nellis.

MARITIE (Arent, David, Arent, Johannes)

Arent and Deliah Putman had two daughters:  Anna, or Nancy; and Marite.  According to an early letter written by De Witt Putman, one of Arent's daughters married John Klock and the other married Mr. Weaver.  If Anna married John Klock, as believed, then Mary Putman married a Weaver.

LEWIS V. (Victor, David, Arent, Johannes)

Lodowyck, or Lewis, Putman was baptized 6 June 1785 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Caughnawaga, Fonda, New York.  Lewis lived in an area of Root, Montgomery Co., New York, that was probably called "Putman's Land," and this area was probably once a part of the Canajoharrie.  At present, I don't know who Lewis Putman's wife was, but she probably died 1850 because she was not listed in Lewis V. Putman's household during the 1850 New York Census.

According to the Land Records of Montgomery Co., "March 1, 1811, Bartholomew Van Alstine and Nancy, his wife of Canajoharry, and Lewis Putman of Canajohary, purchased an equal 1/3 part of the lot purchased by John Van Alstyne, Bartholomew Van Alstyne, and Mathew I. Van Alstyne in common and undivided, which was the southeast corner of Lot No. 4 out of the large Lot No. 1 in Canoghorie Patent . . . .."  The lot contained 66 acres and 24 rods of land.

ARENT V. (Victor, David, Arent, Johannes)

Aaron V.      Aaron was a blacksmith, and in 1832 he removed with his family to Prattsburg, Steuben Co., New York, where he plied his trade in connection with farming 130 acres.  Aaron and Polly were both members of the Ingelside Grande, in which they both held offices.  Both lived until the age of 84.  Aaron died in 1874; Polly died in 1884.

Elizabeth Putman was possibly a daughter of Victor and Maria Schell Putman.  Elizabeth was born about 1790 and married William Row 4 December 1814.  Rev. John Toll officiated and the wedding was in Root, Montgomery Co., New York (p.  33, #121).

Elizabeth may have married second Martin C. Van Alstine 3 July 1825.

ABRAHAM V. (Victor, David, Arent, Johannes)

Abraham V. Putman was born in "Canajoharie," Montgomery Co. and was probably a son of Victor D. and Marie Schell Putman.  Victor and Maria then lived in Root, Montgomery Co., New York, then part of Canajoharie.

Abraham's date of birth is not known.  The 1850 New York Census of Onondaga Co. says that Abraham V. Putman was born in 1785; however, it appears Abraham was born in 1792 or 1793, because his obituary, a biography of his son George, the 1840 New York Census, the 1860 New York Census, and the 1865 New York State Census concur with that date.

Much of what we known about Abraham V. Putman comes from Onondaga's Centennial:

Abraham was . . . a native of Montgomery Co., born in Canajoharie in 1793 and came to Onondaga Co., [New York] in 1836.  He was a farmer and was engaged on various farms in Tully, Spafford, and Marcellus.  He died in Manlius in March 1874.  His wife, Hannah Van Alstine, was also a native of Montgomery Co.  They had eight children . . . ..

Hannah probably died before 1850 because census takers did not list her in Abraham's household that year.  Abraham Putman died in Manlius, Onondaga Co., 27 April 1873.  The Weekly Recorder, Fayetteville, New York, printed a short obituary that read:  "Deaths--Putman--In this village April 27, 1873, Abraham V. Putnam, aged 81 years." (Sue Kendrick, 1994)

            8.   George W.  George was born 30 April 1839 in Tully, Onondaga Co., New York and married, probably second, Caroline Bellinger, 14 March 1871 in Mapletown, Montgomery Co., New York.  Caroline, born 5 November 1838, was the daugther of William I. Bellinger, a Col. of the 138 New York Militia, and Eliza Putman (Mohawk Valley Bellingers).  George had no children although he was married twice.  Onondaga's Centennial records:

George W. Putman, Manilus, was born in the town of Tully, April 30, 1839. Abraham, his father, was a native of Montgomery Co. . . .  George W., the youngest [son of Abraham and Hannah Putman], was educated in the common schools and a select school, then engaged in farming.  He was 15 years old when his parents moved to Marcellus, where he lived until 1867, when they moved to Manilus.  In 1874, Mr. Putnam bought a farm of 30 acres in the town, which is devoted wspecially to the cultivation of fruit.  Mr Putnam has been collector, constable, and in 1882 was appointed deputy sheriff.  In 1892, he was elected on the high license ticket to the office of excise commissioner.  In 1871, Mr. Putnam married Caroline Bellinger of Montgomery Co.  He and his family are members of the Methodist Church of Fayetteville.

George died suddenly while visiting his sister Mrs. Martin in Ithaca, New York.  His obituary in the Fayetteville Bulletin, 29 December 1922, said:

Mr. Putnam was a well known farmer of the High Bridge Rd., having owned several farms in the same neighborhood.  He served several years as town assessor and was prominent in affairs of the Methodist Church.

Caroline died in October 1909.  Both George W. and Caroline Bellinger Putman were buried at Fayetteville Cemetery.

PHILIP V. (Victor, David, Arent, Johannes)

Philip V. Putman was born 20 November 1791 in Root, Montgomery Co., New York.  History of Montgomery Co., New York, says Philips' father, Victor Putman, was a resident of Root before the Revolution, and it appears Philip's parents were Victor Putman and Maria Schell, early residents of the town of Root.

History of Montgomery Co., New York, also says that during the Revolution, Philip's grandfather, David, was out fishing one day with two other men when Tories and Indians captured and took them prisoners.  David was to old to travel, so they killed him.  Phillip's grandfather was probably David A. Putman son of Arent Putman and Elizabeth Akkerman.

Philip Putman married Elizabeth Kring, who was born 11 November 1791.  They had nine children:  seven sons and two daughters.  Philip served in the War of 1812 in the 1st. Regiment, Nellis'Company, New York Militia, and later he became a hatter and cloth dresser.

About 1833, Philip and Elizabeth removed to Palatine, Montgomery Co., New York.  Philip was blind many years before his death 19 August 1859;  Elizabeth died 22 February 1856.  Both were buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Sand Flats, New York.
